Logistics fleetfoots prove they can compete Published Feb. 7, 2008 By Chief Master Sgt. Gloriadean Legget 149th Fighter Wing LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The "Gunfighters" relay team took first place for all military teams competing in the 23rd annual San Antonio Zoo eight-mile relay held Sep. 14, 2007. Team members Maj. Jeffrey Griffith, Technical Sgt. Jose Zuniga, Staff Sgt. Jorge Esparza and Senior Airmen Michael McDermott competed in the event as a newly formed team the week prior. The team was a-spur-of-the-moment decision. "The team was formed during the LRS Squadron physical training run," said Esparza. "The team started off as a friendly rivalry that built into a competitive relay team representing the 149th." Although they never practiced together, they competed in the relay the following week. The "Gunfighters" competed with a host of teams and finished 13th out of 245 overall. "Not bad for a team that was put together just a week ago," said Esparza.
